Weekly Opinion: Social Media & Age 13

According to Facebook’s Terms of Service, “You will not use Facebook if you are under 13.” and according to Tumblr’s Terms of Service, “Subscriber certifies to Tumblr that if Subscriber is an individual (i.e., not a corporate entity), Subscriber is at least 13 years of age. No one under the age of 13 may provide any personal information to or on Tumblr (including, for example, a name, address, telephone number or email address). ” and according to Xbox LIVE’s Terms of Use, “The Service is not intended for use by children under 13 without adult supervision“. Almost every site that requires registration of any kind will have terms of service similar to these and in fact, some require users to be 16 or 18.

Add a reply to this post and talk about why you think these sites have set 13 as the age where you are allowed to set up your own account? Do you think it is fair that you are either not allowed to use an Internet site or must be supervised on the site until you are 13 years old? Why or why not? Make sure you reply in complete sentences using proper grammar and spelling.

  1. I think it is fair that you have to be 13 to create an account on most websites. I think they set 13 as the age because it is when you become a teenager and you are more responsible and want to become more social with your friends and other people.

  2. I think social networking sites set the age to 13 because they think teenagers are more responsible online and can be trusted more than younger children. I do believe that people should be 13 or older when they get social networking sites, but I think kids don’t need to be supervised all the time when they are online before they are 13.

  3. I think 13 is a fair minimum age for social media websites. By the time most people turn 13, they’re mature enough to post responsibly on the Internet. In addition, waiting until said age is a good way to protect younger children from possibly inappropriate posts by other people.

  4. I think sites should do this because there could be some things that kids 12 and under shouldn’t know. When you are older you know what you are doing on the website, at a very young age you could be getting into stuff you shouldn’t be getting into or accidentally downloading viruses. I think it’s good to be doing this so kid could be more safe on the internet.

  5. I think they set the age to thirteen because they can’t trust younger kids. I think it is fair for younger kids to be supervised because they might click on the wrong thing and open a bad site.

  6. I think that its good that these websites put age requirements. I think they do this to keep kids safe.Sometimes because kids wont think before they say and they might give a lot of info to people they don’t know. I also think this is fair.

  7. I think that at 13 people become more mature and most sites don’t think that they will abuse their accounts. I feel that it is safer this way, but everyone just lies about their age anyways.

  8. You are allowed to set up your account at the age of thirteen because when your thirteen you will be certified as a teen.I think it is fair because when you are younger than thirteen years old you won’t know what to do or you won’t know if you need permission.

  9. I think that people that are younger or older than 13 that they could have a Facebook or Tumblr. I think it is not fair that we should look at thing without someone watching us that if you are under 13 that you can go on the internet because we should make are own choice.
